Who are the Cossacks?

There are a lot of information about Cossacks on the Internet. And there are a lot of people, who have head about Cossacks or know something about them. But for some reason it is very difficult to find two of them who would have the same opinion about the subject.

The Cossack movement played an outstanding role in the historical fate of Ukraine. It one of the most tragic and heroic period in Ukraine history.

The earliest written information about existence of the Cossacks is dated to the 10th century. In the 16th century Cossack clans consolidated into two large centers - Zaporojie, on the river Dniepr and the Don Cossacks State on the river Don. These two Cossacks State served as the protectors for the towns and from aggressive invaders.

In pre-revolutionary Russia cossacks were known as the most trusted Czars' guardians. After the Great October Revolution (1917) they became "the class enemies" for all those who believed in Bolsheviks ideas. We don't have the ability to change history. But perhaps the truth, as usually, can be found somewhere in between these two polar opinions.

People's memory keeps live those glorious days of the Cossacks liberation movement. They commemorate their national heroes. But there still a lot of contradictions about Cossack's influence to the Russia's and Ukraine history.

Feodosia , Ukraine - 2,500 years of history.

Have you ever touched the stones which somebody put on place 2,500 years ago? You can do it in Feodosia. The city was founded in the 6th century BC by Greek colonists from Miletos. Feodosia means "Given by God". It is only 500 years younger then the Eternal City of Rome. Athens, the capital of Greece is 250-300 years older then Feodosia.

Modern Feodosia is an administrative center of the south-eastern Crimea. Its population of about 87, 000 people. It is sarrounded with smaller towns Koktebel, Kurortnoe, Ordgonikidze, Primorsky, and others. Each of them has its own history, things it is famous for, which distinguish them from each other.

Russian writer K.Paustovsky wrote about Eastern Crimea: "It was full of bloom and calm. You won't find similar nature at any other Crimean part like in this special isolated country." This part of Crimean Peninsula really looks like it is much older than the rest of Crimea.

Feodosia area has a lot to surprise its visitors: ancient fortresses, monasteries and churches, interesting art, archaeological, and literature museums, unique nature and scenery. But the major Feodosia attraction is the Black Sea. This area has about 15 km of the best in Crimea sand beaches.

Ukrainian Folk Music. Ukrainian folk songs.

Folk music has always been a natural way for people to express their sincere feelings and emotions. Even our rational time couldn't stop interest to folk music.

Traditions of the Ukrainian folk music are originated from the ancient peasant rituals which celebrated times of the year and natural agricultural circles. Transferred from generation to generation, Ukrainian folk songs have rich melodies and rhythmical structures.

Modern Ukrainian culture has a lot of young performers who continue traditions of the Ukrainian folk music. A 2006 year's Ukrainian "EuroVision" winner, Ruslana, was born in Carpathians Mountains where tradition of folk music are especially strong. Video brings us some idea about Carpathians beautiful nature and national Ukrainian musical instruments.

City of Odessa, Ukraine.

Odessa can be considered a pretty young city according to European standards. It was founded in 1794 by the Empress Catherine the Great after the Russian-Turkish war of 1787-91. Odessa quickly became a major Russian port on the Black Sea. A free port regime declared in 1819 provided for Russia opportunity to develop external trade connections through its new port Odessa and made it very attractive for foreign investors.

As a result, the present day city of Odessa is a home of an extremely diverse population of Russians, Jews, Greeks, Ukrainians, Armenians, Germans, Bulgarians, Albanians, Italians, Frenchmen. They brought their own cultures, languages, experience of trade and management.

This cosmopolitan city has produced many world wide famous people. Here are only a few names: the violinists David Oistrakh, Nathan Milstein and Mischa Elman; writers Ilf and Petrov, Isaac Babel, and Yuri Olesha; the pianists Emil Gilels, Sviatoslav Richter, and Benno Moiseiwitsch; the chess player Efim Geller.

There is something special in this city. Many of those people who have never been there before want to live in Odessa once they visit it. Probably due to their necessity and willingness to tolerate and accept people of many different cultures, Odessites developed in their characters well known ironic sense of humor. No wander it is considered the "Humor Capital" of Ukraine. I think, Odessa is the only city
in the former Soviet Union where April Fool's Day is a day-off celebrated extremely "seriously".

There is some brightness, excitement, sensation of "everything is possible in Odessa". It is a pleasant city to live, work and visit. For more information about this southern Ukrainian city link to

Ukraine Wedding Traditions.

Why do Ukrainians say "to play wedding" instead of "to celebrate wedding"? Time changes, traditions follow these changes. But even today any Ukrainian wedding has those full of special meaning ancient rituals which 100-200 years ago made wedding not just a party, but a real theatrical play.

Today practically nobody can explain why these traditions, but every one is aware that this is a way wedding ritual has to go. They still force a groom to pay a ransom to be admitted to the bride's house, steal the bride or her shoe, or seat the parents of the groom or bride in the decorated cart, pull it to the water, overturn the cart, and dump the parents into the water make them completely wet.

Is it silly or irrational? May be, but before we put a tag on them we have to remember that all those rituals came through the centuries. They absorbed the wisdom of generations of our ancestors and full of deep meaning.

Times have been changed, but every year we will meet happy newlyweds like this young couple and watch their weddings - two days of their life which can never be forgotten.
